South Richmond

The southern area of the city of Richmond is known in all areas of local life and governance as Richmond's Southside. Southside Richmond consists of the entire area of the city lying south of the James River. Although it is legally considered part of the city of Richmond,Southside is drastically different in culture and attitudes from the rest of Richmond and is generally considered to be a community that is entirely separate from the actual city. That having been said, the Southside of Richmond is a major source of revenue and employment for the city and surrounding counties with its many key industrial and commercial sites. Visitors driving through the Southside of Richmond will first be treated to an unpleasant smell resembling a vast, open sewer. However, the Richmond Water Treatment Plant is only one of the many things thatSouthside to offer. There is also the Phillip Morris USA manufacturing center, which is the production headquarters for the manufacture of Marlboro, Virginia Slim and Parliament cigarettes, a popular consumer product which the Center for Disease Control reports is responsible for the death of some half million of citizens each year. Yes, whether it is the sprawling slums or the localNascar Speedway, there is little doubt why Southside is a district that Richmond City is happy to tax and otherwise leave well alone.
