The Visual Arts Center of Richmond hosts its 53rd annual contemporary craft show, Craft + Design, on November 17-19, 2017 in Richmond, Virginia. The show, presented by Altria Group, always takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving and kicks off Richmond’s holiday shopping season, bringing out a crowd of over 3,000 art lovers.
This year, VisArts is moving the show to the newly renovated train shed at Main Street Station and doubling the number of exhibitors to 130. General admission shopping hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18 and Sunday, Nov. 19. Tickets are $10 each.
The event features a beer garden by Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, which will run throughout the weekend. Alamo BBQ, Goatocado and Espresso-a-Go-Go will be serving food during shopping hours.
New this year is the Weinstein Properties Education Wing, a space where adults and families can explore the media taught at VisArts by making some art of their own.
Craft + Design is a museum-quality show that with a reputation for showcasing the finest in contemporary crafts. Awards are presented in ceramics, contemporary design, fiber, glass, innovative use of traditional craft materials, precious metals, and wood and recycled materials. Organizers also honor artists with the New Artist Award and the Best Booth Design Award. Last year’s Elisabeth Scott Bocock Best in Show Award went to glass artist Sean Donlon.
The show is the signature event of the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, a community arts center in the heart of the city’s historic Fan District. For more than five decades, VisArts has helped adults and children explore their creativity and make great art. Each year, VisArts offers more than 900 visual and creative arts classes and touches the lives of more than 33,000 people through its classes, community outreach programs, camps, workshops and special events.
